A 3-year-old boy found a live grenade in his Washington, D.C., yard.

A child discovered a dangerous explosive device near his parents' home in the village of Hartline, which is about a three-hour drive from Seattle, Washington, writes Daily MailThe boy was not injured.

The boy brought the grenade he found into the house and handed it to his parents. They called the sheriff's office around 18:45 PM on Monday, September 30, to report the find.

While waiting for the police to arrive, the parents put the device in a shed, away from the house.

A bomb squad was quickly dispatched to the scene along with sheriff's deputies.

Arriving specialists confirmed that the grenade was live.

The device was then removed and disposed of in a rural area north of the small town, the Grant County Sheriff's Office said.

The agency posted a photo of the find on Facebook: a rusty grenade that looks like one from World War II.

"The grenade was of the type used during World War II and appeared to have been left outdoors for a long time," the sheriff's office said. "It is unknown how the grenade ended up in the family's yard or how long it had been there."

However, Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad Commander Clifford Pratt said the find was not actually a military-grade weapon, but an improvised explosive device (IED) housed in a grenade casing.

He noted that the presence of an IED inside the hull makes this find even more dangerous.

"They have no quality control or standards. We consider such devices extremely unstable, because until we approach them in a protective suit, take an X-ray, and examine them, we can't know exactly what's inside," he explained.

According to him, such devices, which he called "new grenades," are manufactured somewhere without the participation of the manufacturer, without documents and data that would allow us to determine their origin.

"Therefore, it's impossible to determine how long this device has been in the ground. It's as if both explosive experts and ordinary people simply said, 'Well, it's been there for a long time.'"

Grant County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kyle Foreman emphasized that while the discovery is shocking, it is not uncommon in the area.

"Grant County once had two military bases: one in Moses Lake, where the international airport is now, and another in Ephrata, also on the site of the current airport," Forman told the publication. "An Army air base was located there during World War II. Therefore, artifacts like these are not uncommon in these areas."

Local authorities have issued a call to residents: if anyone notices such a device, they must immediately report it to the police.
