CBP One App Reopens, Now Offers Self-Deportation Registration
The Trump administration has unveiled an updated mobile app previously used to apply for asylum, transforming it into a system that allows people living in the U.S. illegally to declare their desire to leave the country voluntarily, according to SPC.

The rebranded app, now called CBP Home, was unveiled on March 10 and is part of the administration’s campaign to encourage “self-deportation.” The app is being marketed as a simple, cost-effective way to speed up President Donald Trump’s push to deport millions of unlawful immigrants.
“The app provides unauthorized immigrants in the United States with a clear way to declare their intent to leave voluntarily, giving them the opportunity to leave the country before they face more serious problems,” said U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Acting Commissioner Pete Flores.

After Trump took office, an earlier version of the app, CBP One, abruptly stopped accepting asylum applications, and tens of thousands of appointments at the border were canceled.
Since January 2023, more than 900 people have been admitted to the country with an immigration parole through CBP One (usually for two years).
The Trump administration has repeatedly called on illegal immigrants to leave the country.
“The CBP Home app gives illegal immigrants the opportunity to leave now so they can return to the United States legally and live the American dream in the future,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem wrote on social media. “If they don’t, we will find them, deport them, and never return.”
Experts question how many people without legal status will opt to use what has long been known as "voluntary exit," and it is unclear what the government is trying to achieve with the new app.
“I don’t know exactly what their intentions are,” said Colleen Putzel-Kavanagh, an analyst at the Migration Policy Institute. “But right now they [the government] are creating a climate of fear around immigration.”
These measures range from highly publicized arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to transporting migrants to the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. The new app could be part of this “targeted PR campaign” to convince more people to leave the U.S., she said.

Some of those living in the United States illegally decided to leave before Trump's inauguration, although it is not known how many there were.
It must be said that previous large-scale campaigns to combat illegal immigration (most famously the partly military operation of the mid-1950s, which Trump has repeatedly praised) forced many immigrants who were in the United States legally to leave the country.
