More than 800 brands, including Heinz and Waitrose, have lost the right to use the royal coat of arms on their products after the Queen's death. Now they have to prove that the royal family is using their products to return the coat of arms to the packaging. Insider.

According to the Association of Royal Warrant Holders, the products of approximately 875 brands bear the royal coat of arms, which is currently invalid. However, the brand may continue to use the royal coat of arms for up to two years, unless there are "substantial changes in the company in question," according to the association's website.

As the new reigning monarch, King Charles III will have the power to review and issue royal warrants.

Brands can use the royal coat of arms in their product designs if they have a Royal Warrant of Appointment, a document that allows brands to use the coat of arms if they supply goods or services to the royal family. According to the association's website, to qualify for a Royal Warrant, companies and businesses must supply "products or services on a regular and ongoing basis to members of the royal family."

Brands applying for the warrant must also show that they have environmental and sustainability policies and action plans.

The royal coat of arms, which shows an English lion on the left and a Scottish unicorn on the right, holding a shield with emblems from different parts of the United Kingdom, has a statement at the bottom of the coat of arms. It talks about which member of the royal family issued the warrant. For example, "By appointment of Her Majesty the Queen."

A Royal Warrant is issued for up to five years and can be reviewed for renewal one year prior to its expiration. According to the association, between 20 and 40 warrants are issued each year and the same number are cancelled.
