In Ukraine, a human rights activist was killed who was investigating the death of her sister

On January 1, the body of lawyer and human rights activist Irina Nozdrovskaya was discovered in the Kyiv region of Ukraine. Her relatives reported her disappearance on December 29. Nozdrovskaya was investigating the accident in which her sister died: in 2015, she was killed by the nephew of the chairman of the district court. Ukrainian police do not rule out that the woman’s murder is related to the investigation. "Medusa"describes the facts currently known.

The accident, in which Irina Nozdrovskaya's sister died, happened on September 30 of 2015. 26-year-old Svetlana Sapatinskaya was hit by a car in the village of Demidovo, Vyshgorodsky district, Kyiv region. Behind the wheel was Dmitry Rossoshansky - nephew and. about. the chairman of the district court. Later examination revealed traces of narcotic substances in the blood of Rossoshansky. After the fatal accident, the driver was not arrested, but released under house arrest. Only in May, 2017, Dmitry Rossoshansky, was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Nozdrovskaya was investigating the death of her sister. In the summer of 2017, she told the Observer in an interview that she had to quit her job, talk to witnesses, convince them to testify, and order additional expert examinations and expert advice at her own expense. As “Novoye Vremya” writes, the drug intoxication of Rossoshansky was not documented, and the husband of the deceased “for unknown reasons” wrote a statement refusing claims to the driver who shot down his wife.

On the disappearance of Nozdrovskaya relatives reported December 29. The human rights activist disappeared on the way from Kiev to the village of Demidovo, where she lived. Nozdrovskaya’s close friends claimed that she had received repeated threats from relatives of the defendant. On January 1, MP Mustafa Nayem wrote on Facebook that 27 December - 2 day before his disappearance - at a court hearing, during which the appeal of lawyers Dmitry Rossoshansky was rejected, his father told Irina that she would "end badly."

The body of Irina Nozdrovskaya was found on January 1. He was found in one of the rivers near the village of Demidovo. As MK writes, the woman was not wearing any clothes - only a bra and jewelry remained. The exact cause of death has not yet been announced, but the police reported that wounds with a piercing object were found on the body. Authorities are considering several versions of the murder, including attempted rape and “punishment” for Nozdrovskaya’s participation in the investigation of the accident in which her sister died.

2 January in Kiev, a demonstration was held in connection with the murder of Nozdrovskaya. About 250 people, including journalists, lawyers and bloggers, went to the building of the Main Police Department of the Kiev region and demanded to find the killers of a human rights activist and dismiss the head of the department. To punish those responsible for the murder of Irina Nozdrovskaya also called on the United States.
