Yeah, they have everything in order with a sense of humor. Where did the unusual name come from? There are two main versions. The first one says that in the 1830's, two travelers who spoke German came out somewhere near their stagecoach to walk. One of them saw the local landscapes and said: “So schoene hell” (how beautiful and bright). Someone heard the last word and left this name.

The second version tells about the same period of time - 1838, when a certain George Reeves built a store, mill and distillery on the river bank. Local men often stayed at his establishment for a long time, and when their wives looked for them, they received the answer: “Probably your husband has fallen into hell!” When the state of Michigan was formed in 1841, a miller was asked what name he would like to give his city. And he replied: “Even if you call it Hell, everyone still says that.” In October the city received an official name.

A whimsical chapel with a question mark on the steeple and blue doors designed to protect against evil spirits, accepts spouses and guests. An 12 person can enter inside, including a couple, but the sites around can accommodate up to 150 guests.
