The State Department is changing the test for US citizenship: testing of the new version has already begun

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) On December 14, he announced that he was starting testing an updated test for US citizenship. While it will be taken by volunteers, and then the new test will become official. Change two of the four components of the test will be subjected.

The naturalization test has four components: reading, writing and speaking English, and a US civil law test. Reading and writing are already standardized and will not change. Innovations concern only tests of English speaking skills and knowledge of US civil law.

What will change

Oral English Test

Previously, to test an immigrant's ability to speak English, they were asked questions about the contents of their N-400 form, or simply conducted a short, simple interview.

Now they want to complicate the verification. Applicants will be offered three color photographs. They will need to be described in English. The images will be related to the topics of everyday life, weather or food. They will clearly depict what you will need to describe.

The test is based on topics and situations that are most often covered in English language courses. In particular, they can usually be found in ESL (English as a Second Language) textbooks for adults.

Applicants will be judged on their ability to answer questions in English, describe pictures using vocabulary and simple phrases related to the picture.

As part of testing the new format, three images will be selected from a bank of 70 shots. Then only 40 images will be left, which will be included in the standardized image bank for checking oral English.

Civics Test

This test will be simplified a bit. Answer options will be added to the questions, from which you need to choose the correct one. Now there are no answer options, you just need to voice the correct answer yourself.

During the test, applicants will be required to answer ten multiple-choice civics questions. They will have to choose the one most appropriate answer from the four options presented. In order to pass the test, as now, you will need to correctly answer 6 out of 10 questions.

Most of the questions on the new civics test will be similar to the current test. Civics tests will be displayed on the tablet.

Piloting a new naturalization test format

USCIS has already begun preparations and will conduct a nationwide pilot test with community organizations and volunteers within 5 months of 2023. More information will be released on January 12th.

The data collected during this pilot project will be used to make the final changes to the citizenship test. The new test is expected to be applied in 2024.
