The State Department confirmed the dismissal of the US ambassador to Ukraine: outraged by the decision in Congress

The United States Department of State has officially confirmed that the US Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, in May 2019, will early terminate his authority after three years in Kiev.

The official commentary says that this decision was made as part of the planned rotation, which occurs immediately after the election of a new president in Ukraine, notes Voice of America.

“Ambassador Yovanovitch will complete his 2019-year diplomatic assignment in Kyiv in 3, as planned. Her confirmed departure date in May coincides with the presidential changes in Ukraine. The team at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv and Washington continues to work closely with the Ukrainian government and civil society to strengthen our partnership,” the statement reads.

Marie Yovanovic has been working in Kiev since August 2016. She was involved in the active attempts of the international community to help Ukraine in resisting pressure from Russia, which annexed the Crimea and de facto controls certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

Yovanovych, along with other Western diplomats, also spoke in support of reforms aimed at fighting corruption, strengthening the economy and improving the efficiency of state structures of Ukraine.

The termination of the cadence in May means that Jovanovic will end his term a few months before the full three years.

In 2016, Marie Yovanovitch replaced Jeffrey Payette as US Ambassador to Ukraine. In July of the same year, the US Senate approved her candidacy, and on August 23 Jovanovitch arrived in Kiev.

Prior to that, she worked as Assistant Secretary of State and was responsible for bilateral relations with the countries of Scandinavia, the Baltic States and Central Europe. She also served as ambassador to Armenia (2008-2011) and Kyrgyzstan (2005-2008), and worked in embassies in Moscow, London, Ottawa, Mogadishu and Kiev.

In the House of Representatives of the United States Congress consider unreasonable premature recall of the US ambassador to Ukraine, writes Present Tense.

This is stated in a statement by the leader of the democratic majority in the House of Representatives, Stenie Hoyer, and the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, Eliot Engel.

"The White House's outrageous decision to recall her is a blow to political positions... It is clear that the decision was politically motivated, as President Trump's allies joined foreign actors in lobbying for the ambassador's resignation," the statement said.

According to members of the House of Representatives, recalling Jovanovic just a few months before the completion of her diplomatic mission in Ukraine is detrimental to American interests and undermines American diplomacy.

“We call on the administration to immediately reverse this strange decision. During this period of transition, Ukraine needs gifted professionals like Ambassador Yovanovitch more than ever,” it continues.

• President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in this situation sided with Marie Yovanovitch, expressing his full support for the US ambassador to Ukraine and satisfaction with the strategic partnership with the United States. • 20 March, during an interview in the “Hannity” program on Fox News, former US federal prosecutor Joe DiDjenova expressed the need for remove Jovanovic from his position because of her actions to “undermine the credibility” of the Trump administration.
• He also asked that Pete Sessions (a Republican from Texas), who at that time served as chairman of the Rules Committee, wrote about the dismissal of Jovanovic back in 2018, who at that time wrote personal letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with a request to withdraw Jovanovic, arguing that she made scornful statements about President Trump.
