Cities with highest sales taxes
Chicago is often called the “Second City” - it is the second most important financial center in America after New York. But when it comes to high sales taxes, Chicago is rightfully number one in the United States.
Chicago ranks first, along with two California cities, Long Beach and Glendale, the Washington, D.C.-based tax research organization Tax Foundation said, citing Fox Business.
Each of these three cities is subject to state sales tax of 10,25%.
In Chicago, consumers pay the state 6,25%, the city an additional 1,25%, Cook County 1,75%, and the transit authority an additional 1%. Added up, you get an extra $10,25 for every $100 you spend.

“This is just one symptom of Chicago's chronic problem of overspending,” said Adam Schuster, director of budget and tax studies at the conservative Illinois Policy Institute. “With a looming budget hole and rising pension debt to $29 billion, taxpayers have no end in sight.”
Schuster claims that Chicagoans also face some of the highest tax rates in the country for services and goods such as parking, mobile phone, streaming, and a travel search service. Some property owners also noticed that in 2019, their tax accounts grew by almost 12%.
Among the cities studied by the Tax Foundation, Portland, Oregon, and Anchorage, Alaska, scored the lowest—neither have sales taxes.

The only cities across the country with a sales tax rate of 5,5% or less are: Madison, Wisconsin, Richmond, Virginia, and Honolulu, Hawaii.
Chicago is in the top position for the second year in a row.
In 2020, Long Beach voters will decide using a special ballot whether to keep the total city sales tax at 10,25% constantly.
