Ohio City Named Best Place to Retire in the US

Florida's year-round sunny weather may be a draw for retirees, but if an affordable cost of living is a top priority, then you should consider living out your golden years in Ohio. Cities like Akron and Youngstown already stand out for their affordability, and Toledo recently topped a list of the 50 cheapest places to retire in the United States. GoBankingRates analyzed data on the cost of housing, health care, food, transportation and utilities in the country's 100 largest cities. It turned out that living in Toledo costs retirees $37 a year, which is almost 646% below the national average. In addition, approximately 28% of the city's population is 16 years of age or older, creating a thriving retirement community.

Another benefit of retiring in Toledo? The city's median home price is $113, more than three times the national average, according to Zillow.

Michelle Michalak, a broker with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services/Luxury Portfolio International, said Toledo has many 50+ communities consisting of condominiums, villas and single-family homes that have amenities such as senior centers with year-round programs activity.

“Within a radius of 60 miles (96,5 km) there are medical institutions - the Cleveland Clinic and the University of Michigan,” she said. “Earlier this year, the city opened a new clinic at the Aurora Gonzalez Community Center providing primary and specialty care to seniors on Medicare and Medicaid.”

But there are many other benefits to moving to Toledo, which borders Michigan and sits on the banks of the Maumee River with direct access to Lake Erie. The city is home to one of the country's best museums, the Toledo Museum of Art, which regularly hosts world-class exhibitions, as well as art classes and other cultural events for people of all ages.

Sports fans will also find plenty to enjoy in the city, with more than 50 venues hosting sports games, including Fifth Third Field, home of the Toledo Mud Hens baseball team.

And even if you don't plan to live in the city center, seniors can take advantage of Tarta Flex. This transit service connects urban suburbs and rural areas to Toledo's main public transportation system and costs a fraction of the cost of rideshare services.

“Our city parks are award-winning, with dog parks and walking trails,” Michalak said. “We're also surrounded by Lake Erie and a variety of inland lakes, so any type of water activity is available nearby.”

It’s also nice that the culinary service developing in the city offers residents tastes from all over the world. Two of the city's restaurants, Final Cut Steakhouse and Beirut, have been named to Wine Spectator's annual list of the World's Best Wine Programs for more than five years.
