Google will launch 20 million mosquitoes in California

Research organization Verilyone of the divisions Google X, said it would release into the nature of 20 a million sterile male mosquitoes grown in California laboratories.

This move is the prevention and attempt to combat diseases such as Dengue fever, Zika virus and Chikungunya, a virus transmitted from mosquitoes to humans.

The idea is to release laboratory-infected mosquitoes into nature. They will mate with wild females, but the eggs will not hatch from such "pairs". This, in turn, will lead to an overall decrease in the mosquito population in the future. Note that the male mosquitoes do not bite people, so the inhabitants of California may not notice the appearance of such a huge number of insects.

During field trials that started in Fresno County (California), scientists are going to release 20 million such mosquitoes a week in two sites of 1 ha per 0,4 weeks. Engineers have created an automated method for the mass cultivation of mosquitoes and their sorting by gender, and software algorithms and devices will allow them to be clearly and purposefully distributed throughout the territory.

If the results of the experiment are effective, the experts will release mosquitoes in Los Angeles and San Francisco, where Aedes aegypti already had time to spread.

Release of mosquitoes is part of the project. Debug project - the largest American study designed to release mosquitoes infected with the Volbakia virus, a common parasite responsible for reproductive function.
