Google to pay $23 million in compensation: you may be entitled to some of that money

People who searched with Google and clicked on search results between October 2006 and September 2013 may be eligible for a portion of the $23 million that Google has agreed to pay. The edition told in more detail USA Today.

A class action lawsuit alleging that Google shared users' search queries with third-party websites without permission has resulted in a settlement.

Google denied that it shared the information and said the settlement was not an admission of guilt.

Who is eligible to receive money under a Google class action lawsuit

People who used Google search and clicked on a link with search results in the period from October 26, 2006 to September 30, 2013 inclusive, are included in the settlement agreement as its participants.

These people must decide to participate by July 31st.

How to file a claim

To opt-out or participate in a settlement, visit referrerheadersettlement.com.

To opt out of the settlement, click on exclusion form page, where you will register to receive a member ID, after which you can complete a claim waiver.

To participate in the settlement, click on registration form page. Fill out your information and submit it to receive a member ID at the email address provided on the registration form. Then you will go to "Submit Application" pagewhere you can enter your member ID and submit the application form.

How much can you get

According to current data, payouts for those with approved applications are expected to be around $7,70 per person.

When to expect settlement completion

A final hearing to approve the settlement agreement is currently scheduled for October 12. Users wishing to object to the settlement agreement must write to the court on July 31 why they do not approve of this agreement. They may, among other things, ask to speak in court on this matter.

How Google will change after the lawsuit

Following the settlement, Google will change its Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and Key Terms pages to explain the circumstances in which search queries are shared with third parties.
