Google 'fixed the error' of displaying Crimea for Russians

Google stated that he corrected an error with incorrect display of the Russian Crimea on his maps with some users in Russia.

“We believe we have fixed an issue that was causing a small portion of Google Maps users on iOS to see incorrect information,” they said on Tuesday. TASS in the company's press service, answering the relevant question. “We make every effort to objectively depict disputed regions, and where we have local versions of Google Maps, such as in Russia, we follow local laws when displaying names and boundaries,” Google added.

Earlier, the State Duma of Russia initiated a check due to an incorrect indication of the territorial identity of the peninsula on Google maps. In particular, at the end of January, the chairman of the chamber Vyacheslav Volodin instructed the relevant committees of the chamber to invite a company representative to the Duma after one of the deputies reported an incorrect indication of the subject of Russia on the map.

Google later admitted that a small number of its maps users "may see incorrect information." At the same time, Google’s director for interaction with government authorities in Russia said that the error will be corrected in the near future. She assured that this situation is a consequence of a technical failure and has no political basis.

Google began to show the Crimea to the Russian territory to users from Russia in 2014, shortly after the annexation of the peninsula by Russia.
