Google has added a very handy feature: you can track all your packages via Gmail

Google can't make your packages arrive on time for the holidays, but at least it can make it easier to track them. The company said that over the next few weeks it will add the ability to track your packages directly from your Gmail inbox. Inc.

Gmail has been around for 18 years and is the default email service for billions of people. This is partly because it's free, but also because it does a few things really well. For example, searching your email - in this Gmail is definitely one of the best services.

However, this can be a problem if you are trying to find an email with a tracking number, for example, because you are expecting a package. Wouldn't it be much easier if your inbox allowed you to track packages without searching through hundreds of emails?

Sometimes Google adds new features and it's not clear who thought it was a good idea. For example, earlier this year Google integrated its Chat and Meet services into Gmail. It's doubtful that most Gmail users care about Google Chat or Google Meet or even know the difference. However, it sits right at the bottom of your inbox.

However, sometimes Google adds Gmail features that are really useful. The last example is one of those.

If Gmail detects that an email contains a tracking number, a label will appear in your inbox to let you know when to expect delivery. In addition, Gmail will let you know when the package will be sent, and if it is delayed, Google will detect the email and let you know. If you've ever changed your plans to be home when a package was supposed to arrive, you know how frustrating it is to find out that a delivery is delayed for some reason.

Google says the feature works with "most major US carriers." We can assume that this means FedEx, UPS and the US Postal Service. Google hasn't said if it will work with Amazon Prime Delivery.

This is not a new idea. In fact, there are several email apps that already do this, most notably Edison Email. In a way, this is a more useful feature in the mail app because it works with any email address, not just Gmail. Also, there are people who would rather not have Google go through their emails looking for tracking numbers so they know where they shopped.

That's fair, but this feature is optional, meaning you can decide if you want Gmail to look for tracking numbers in your email.

As the holidays approach, the idea that your mailbox will simply let you know that a package is on its way and when you can expect it to be delivered seems especially useful.

This seems like the type of feature that Gmail should have had all along. If you are already indexing the contents of my mailbox so that I can search, it should be easy for you to train the program to find tracking numbers.

This brings the user much more value than it takes effort. It turns out that these are the best types of new features.

They may seem small, but they are of great benefit, saving people time and giving them peace of mind.
