Google, Apple and Stanford University: Ukrainian popularizes pysankanism in Silicon Valley

A Ukrainian artist in Silicon Valley is popularizing the art of decorating Easter eggs. Sofia Ogorodnik organizes master classes for employees of world-famous companies, says “Voice of America«.

Pysanka is the best friend of Sofia Ogorodnik. Every day a woman takes a brush in her hands and meditates, creating new ornaments.

“I have an interpreted drawing of a flowerpot and a tree of life. Flowerpots were most often depicted in the making of carpets, and my first education was as a textile worker,” says Sofia.

And there is a creative invention of the artist - a pysanka with a burning heart.

Sofia met the skill of decorating Easter eggs in her childhood at the Oleksa Novakovsky art school in Lviv.

“In 1978, I liked it so much myself that I wanted to pass it on to others. First there was my sister, then neighbors, then classmates, friends, acquaintances. The audience grew every time,” says the craftswoman.

In Lviv, she worked as a textile artist and taught at an art school, but five years ago she moved to Silicon Valley with her programmer husband.

“After meeting a large number of mothers and their children, I realized that many of them are not familiar with the pysankar technique. During Lent, I decided to organize a master class on making Easter eggs once a week absolutely free of charge,” says Sofia.

The idea was so liked that the Ukrainians began to call Sofia more often to study murals. The Americans themselves showed interest. And in March, Ukrainian Facebook social workers invited the artist to conduct a master class at the company.

“I was surprised that there were a lot of men among those willing. They left their families at home and diligently created Easter eggs. They tried to separate the ornament with engineering precision, and they did a good job,” comments the craftswoman.

All paid Sofia master classes are charity events. The artist transfers money to funds of seriously ill children in Ukraine.

Sofia plans to give master classes at renowned companies such as Google, Apple, and Stanford University.
