Head of Russia Today TV channel threatened to close the American media in Russia

Chief editor of the channel Russia Today (RT) in the United States, Margarita Simonyan announced the likely cessation of the work of the American media in Russia if her television channel was forced to refuse to broadcast in the United States because of the requirement of the Department of Justice to register RT as a foreign agent.

Simonyan stated this on the air of the “Results of the Week” program on the channel NTV.

“We are leaving the territory of the United States, we no longer broadcast there... Russia responds in kind towards the American media. Which is not what I would like, because I am a journalist,” she said, emphasizing that this is the worst case scenario.

She added that if the channel “will be forced to stop broadcasting in the United States,” it will use all other available methods of communication with the audience, including the US.

The requirements of the Department of Justice to Russia Today Simonyan considers political.

“In fact, they are driving us out of the country, they are now putting us in conditions in which we cannot work. Here it is, the vaunted freedom of speech. Why do they do this? Because, as they see it, we showed a different point of view, and this influenced their elections,” the journalist noted.

At the same time, she added that the channel intends to comply with the demands of the Department, since in case of non-compliance it “threatens the journalists with prison.”

Recall September 11 The US Department of Justice sent a letter to a company that serves RT America, with the requirement to register as a foreign agent. Also, the FBI launched an investigation into the agency Sputnik.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, in response to these actions, stated that the situation with these media in the United States is contrary to the principles of freedom of speech.
