The leader of the "DNR" Alexander Zakharchenko died in an explosion in Donetsk

The head of the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic, proclaimed by separatists in the east of Ukraine, Alexander Zakharchenko was killed in an explosion at the cafe “Separ” in Donetsk.

His death has already been confirmed in the “residence” of the “DNR” chapter.

Information about the death of Zakharchenko also confirmed the spokesperson of the Security Service of Ukraine Elena Gitlyanskaya.

Deputy Chairman of the Special Monitoring Mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Alexander Hug confirmed the fact of the explosion in the center of Donetsk, but the OSCE does not know whether Zakharchenko died.

“Yes, we heard an explosion in the center of Donetsk literally 200 meters from our residence, there are no more details yet,” Hug said.

Sources of the Nezygar telegram channel stated that in the Separ cafe, where the explosion occurred, Zakharchenko came to the wake of the singer Joseph Kobzon, who died in Moscow on August 30, writes “МК«.

According to "Interfax ", law enforcement officers of the "Donetsk People's Republic" detained suspects of the attempted assassination of Zakharchenko.

“Several people have been detained, Ukrainian saboteurs and persons associated with them, who are suspected of involvement in the assassination attempt on the head of the republic,” the agency’s interlocutor said.

Before the occupation of Donetsk, Zakharchenko led the local branch of the Kharkov fighting club "Oplot". After the militants seized Donetsk in the spring of 2014, Zakharchenko was appointed “military commander” and later “deputy minister of internal affairs of the DPR”. After the illegal elections in November 2014, Zakharchenko was allegedly elected “head of the DPR” and has since held this position.

The United States and the European Union included it in the sanctions lists in 2014, after a Malaysia Airlines Boeing-777 was shot down over the territory of the “DPR”. At the beginning of 2015, Ukraine put Zakharchenko on the wanted list under the article “Creation of a terrorist group or terrorist organization.”
