Giant inflatable ducks appeared on the river in Maine: no one knows where they came from
Giant inflatable ducks swim in Belfast Harbor again. It has become an unexpected annual tradition for a coastal town in Maine, and for the third year in a row, how they got there remains a mystery. Writes about it CNN.
Huge yellow ducks first appeared in the summer of 2021, when one yellow duck labeled "joy" appeared in the harbour, for weeks at a time, according to Scott Smith, operations manager for the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce.
The debut of the duck attracted the attention of astonished local residents and guests of the city and even the whole country.
“It was great to have something fun and charming and simple that really brought a lot of happy feelings and positive energy,” he said.

Last October, the original duck was replaced with an even larger "More Joy" sign.
This year, an inflatable family of three entered the harbor, and the largest duck with the inscription "The greatest joy" joined the toys of yesteryear.
"We don't know who they belong to, we don't know where they came from or how long they'll be here," Smith said.
According to Smith, the appearance of the three ducks caused a stir on social media.
People wrote: “The ducks are back, the ducks are back,” he said.
In Belfast, a city of about 6 people, the sudden sightings of ducks over the past three years have attracted attention.
“You'll see little rubber ducks all over town; you'll find them on bookshelves at local stores or you'll see them at gas stations,” Smith said. “Now they’re popping up everywhere.”

Even out-of-state people get excited about huge floating objects. A woman from Nebraska recently called the chamber's office to make sure the ducks were still swimming, Smith said.
“She wanted to make sure they were still here because she was driving from Nebraska to come to Belfast,” he said.
Chamber has also joined the duck craze by featuring a 2022 Great Joy duck photo on the cover of its annual guide.
“Our directory is selling like crazy this year,” Smith said.
