UN General Assembly accuses Russia of trying to change the demographic situation in Crimea

The meeting of the UN General Assembly was accepted Resolution on the protection of human rights in the annexed Crimea by Russia. It took effect immediately. Writes about it "Voice of America".

65 countries voted in favor, 23 against, 83 abstained. Among those who opposed the adoption of the document were Russia, Belarus, Armenia, China, Venezuela, Syria and Iran.

Basic Provisions of resolution:

• the demand for Russia to stop the policy of changing the demographic situation in Crimea through resettlement and forced eviction;
• condemnation of detentions based on accusations of supporting terrorism of activists in Crimea, in particular, representatives of the public association “Crimean Solidarity”;
• a call to end the persecution and release those detained for expressing an opinion;
• the requirement to immediately release all illegally detained citizens of Ukraine and to ensure their return home;
• condemnation of the practice of recruiting men to serve in the Russian army.

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine stated, that in annexed Crimea the rights of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars are “constantly violated”. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov call it is "fiction".

In September, the UN unveiled First report of the Secretary-General on human rights violations in Crimea. The report, in particular, reflected key aspects of the violation of the civil and political rights of the inhabitants of the peninsula.
