Where to enjoy the sun and beach in winter without leaving the USA

Swimming in the gentle waves seems like a dream when the water is frozen and the wind howls in the dead of winter. However, you can avoid the cold and plan a trip to Florida to satisfy your desire for warmth and outdoor fun. Rock Springs in Apopka, Florida, is just the place to do just that, reports Explore.

Rock Springs is part of Kelly Park, which features hiking trails, hot springs, and plenty of wildlife. If you hop on a kayak and paddle about 17 km downriver, you'll end up at Rock Springs Run Reserve, where there are another 27 km of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails.

Warm water and beautiful views

Rock Springs is simply amazing. The crystal blue water is warm and inviting, making it the perfect place to take a swim or hop on a boat for a ride. Get Up and Go Kayaking offers 2,5-hour tours on the Wekiva River in glass bottom kayaks. You can see wildlife including otters and turtles, watch fish swim directly below your boat, and learn about everything you see from certified guides.

Cost is $59 for children under 17 and $86 for adults 18 and older.

The water at Rock Springs is a comfortable 22C year-round, meaning the water will still be warm during your winter visit. One of the advantages of visiting in winter is the lack of crowds. Spring is the busiest time, summer is also noisy, but winter has quieter days and fewer people. This makes Rock Springs a great winter getaway.

If you want to spend some time on land, you can visit the 3,7 km long Yellow Trai, which allows you to see beautiful trees, flowers and other beautiful plants, as well as wildlife, turtles and hawks.

Camping and entrance fees

If you want to extend your time at Kelly Park/Rock Springs, do so by camping overnight. Please note that the swimming areas and nature trails close at 19:00 in summer and 17:00 in winter, so you will need to plan your day accordingly.

There are 26 campsites here, each with electricity for trailers and RVs. You can reserve your place in advance.

For those who want to come for the day only, admission is $3 for a car with up to two people and $5 for a car with three to eight people. The park is open from 8:00 to 20:00 in summer and from 8:00 to 18:00 in winter.
