Friday morning, Former National Security Advisor to US President Donald Trump, and former US Army Lieutenant General Retired member of his election team Michael Flynn, was charged with giving false testimony by the FBI. In the morning, Flynn arrived at a federal court in Washington.

Flynn pleaded guilty to giving false testimony by the FBI about his contacts with Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak and said he was ready to cooperate with the investigation, reports "Voice of America".

Earlier this year, Michael Flynn had to resign as a result of revelations about a possible connection between Trump’s election team and the Kremlin. Donald Trump himself, as well as the staff of his administration have repeatedly denied the fact of any collusion with Moscow, naming the investigation by Special Prosecutor Robert Muller with a “witch hunt” and the Democrats' desire to avenge him for losing in last year’s elections.

In turn, according to media reports, the Muller team also wants to establish whether Flynn tried to extradite the famous Turkish preacher and opponent of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from the United States to Turkey in exchange for millions of dollars.

According to press reports, Flynn gave false information in two questionnaires, not mentioning the many contacts with Russian officials and his work as a foreign agent in the interests of Turkey.

Flynn was also accused of lying about his request to Kisliak to postpone the vote on the UN Security Council resolution, which allegedly sounded in the December 22 2016 conversation of the year.

At the trial, Flynn indicated that he also did this at the direction of high-ranking officials from Trump's transition team, and assured that he was ready to cooperate fully with the investigation.

“It was extremely painful to endure months of false accusations of infidelity and other outrageous behavior,” the former adviser said in a statement released by his lawyers. “I understand that the actions I admitted to in today’s court were wrong. And now, with faith in God, I hope to fix it.”

In response, the White House issued its own statement.

“The false statements made mirror those false statements heard by White House officials that led to [Flynn's] resignation in February of this year. Nothing in the charges or guilty pleas implicate anyone other than Mr. Flynn himself. The completion of this phase of the special counsel [Mueller's] work once again demonstrates that the investigation is moving at significant speed and clears the way to clear and sound conclusions,” the statement said.

Accusations of Russia's interference in the presidential election in 2016 have been haunted by the Trump administration since the beginning of this year, when the US intelligence services declared that Russia had been trying to help the Republican candidate win.

This issue is being investigated by several congressional committees at once, and in March the previous head of the FBI, James Komi. confirmedthat his agency is also studying these charges.

Shortly thereafter, Donald Trump fired Komi, saying that he made this decision in connection with “this Russian thing,” as a result of which many in Washington spoke that perhaps the president was trying to cover his tracks.
