A Lufthansa passenger attempted to stab two teenagers with a fork, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in Boston.

A Lufthansa flight from Chicago to Germany was diverted to Boston on October 25 after a passenger allegedly stabbed two teenagers with a metal fork, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts. The attacker was arrested in Boston, according to ABC News.

According to the prosecutor's office, 28-year-old Indian citizen Pranit Kumar Usiripalli struck two 17-year-old passengers: one in the shoulder and the other in the back of the head.

"After the meal was served, Passenger A was dozing in the middle seat. When he allegedly woke up, he saw Usiripalli standing over him. He [Usiripalli], the press release states, struck Passenger A with a metal fork with his right hand in the area of ​​his left collarbone. Then, according to investigators, Usiripalli lunged at Passenger B, who was sitting to the right of Passenger A in the middle seat in the center row of the plane, and struck him in the back of the head with the fork. Passenger B suffered a cut to the back of his head."

"When crew members attempted to subdue Usiripalli, he, according to witnesses, raised his hand, formed a pistol with his fingers, pointed them toward his mouth, and pretended to pull the trigger. Immediately after this, Usiripalli turned to the woman sitting to his left and struck her with the palm of his hand. He also attempted to strike a crew member," the report said.

"As a result of the incident, the flight was diverted to Boston International Airport, where Usiripalli was immediately detained," authorities said.

A troublemaker has been charged with assault with a weapon with intent to cause bodily harm while flying on an aircraft under US jurisdiction.

Lufthansa stated that the flight diversion "was caused by the behavior of a disruptive passenger, who was detained by local authorities upon arrival. As a result, the flight to Frankfurt was not continued as scheduled." The company stated that "all passengers were provided with hotel rooms and rebooked on upcoming flights."

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts, Usiripalli was in the United States on a student visa to attend a master's program in biblical studies. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of approximately $250,000. Usiripalli is scheduled to appear in federal court in Boston. A hearing date has not yet been set.
