Five Ohio residents died while trying to rescue a drowning man in a local river.

While trying to help a drowning swimmer, five other swimmers sank to the bottom of the Scioto River in Ohio. Authorities reported the tragedy on July 20, writes The Guardian.

A passing driver called 911 after spotting a frightened child running down the road, Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer said.

Two children under 10 have been placed in the custody of social services, the sheriff said, including the child who ran for help.

On July 19, a group of several people were relaxing by the Scioto River in Powell (a suburb of Columbus). One of them, deciding to take a swim, waded into the water and began drowning.

According to the sheriff, the other vacationers rushed to his aid and also began to sink.

Rescue crews searching the river on July 19 discovered the bodies of two women. They were taken to the hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead, Balzer said. The bodies of three men were found in the river on July 20, according to Delaware County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Tracy Whited.

The tragedy occurred two days after five members of a family died in southern Utah when flash floods engulfed canyons during a hiking trip and claimed their lives.
