Israeli director's film about Ukrainians from Donbass claims for prestigious award
The short film “Anna”, shot by Israeli director Dekel Berenson with the participation of Ukraine, was shortlisted for the BAFTA Award, reports with the BBC with reference to the British Film Academy.
According to the Academy's website, a total of 10 films were nominated for Best British Short Film.
Film companies from Ukraine, Israel and the United Kingdom worked on the film, although they removed the tape completely in Ukraine, and it cost 45 000 dollars.
Filming took place in Kyiv and Krivoy Rog, where, according to the producer of the film Vitaly Sheremetyev, there were the most successful locations, “you could feel the flavor of the cities.”
The world premiere of the film took place on May 24, 2019 at the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival, and the Ukrainian premiere at the Kiev International Film Festival “Molodist”.
On the subject: Like in the movies: the life in the USA resembles plots from Hollywood films
The motion picture tells the story of a single mother named Anna, who lives in war-torn east of Ukraine and brings up her 16-year-old daughter. The main character works at a meat processing plant and dreams of a better life.
Anna's life is hard and hopeless, and she desperately wants to change her. To do this, Anna turns to a marriage agency that introduces women to foreign men. The role of Anna in the film was played by the Ukrainian actress Svetlana Barandich.
“Anna” is an ironic look by Israeli director Berenson at the tourist trips of foreigners to Ukraine to pick up brides.
The BAFTA Film Award is an annual award from the British Academy of Television and Motion Picture Arts (a British Oscar equivalent). Ukrainian film for the first time falls into the short list of this film award.
The winners will be awarded on February 2 in London.
