A film about Maidan by an American director was recognized as the best documentary.
The film “Freedom or Death” by New York City native Demyan Kolodiy was recognized as the best documentary of May at the Miami Independent Film Festival.
The author of the film tells the story of euromaidan, starting with the first peaceful actions in support of the signing of a free trade agreement with the European Union.
The film explores how peaceful demonstrations escalated into violent conflict between Ukrainian society and the government led by Viktor Yanukovych. This film is a chronological “portrait” of how public protest in Kyiv resulted in a hybrid war with Russia, which led to global consequences for the whole world.
Events in Ukraine became painful and ambiguous even for the Ukrainians themselves, but the foreign audience, according to the author, has no idea about Ukrainian realities at all:
Many people in the West have a vague understanding of events in Ukraine. "Freedom or Death" is a film created for an English-speaking audience. I believe it can be an invaluable tool for drawing the attention of the Western public to events in Ukraine.
