FBI calls Russian mobile app counterintelligence US
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) considers any mobile application developed in Russia as a “potential counterintelligence threat” to the United States. This publication reports Reuters.
A corresponding response from the FBI to a New York State Senator, Chuck Schumer, who asked the bureau to verify the FaceApp app, was posted on December 2 on his page in Twitter.
As noted, this year the popularity of the virus application for smartphones has increased dramatically thanks to a filter that allows you to make the faces of users in photographs aged.
The Russian origin of the application has caused concern in America. This prompted the National Democratic Committee to warn US Democratic candidates in the 2020 election of the inadmissibility of its use. In particular, for this reason, Schumer turned to the FBI for clarification regarding the safety of using the application.
On the subject: Virus application FaceApp provides Russian companies with wide access to your data
There is no evidence that FaceApp provides user data to the Russian government. However, the FBI, in a letter sent to Schumer, said that the ability of Moscow to access communications directly through Internet providers makes any application created in Russia risky.
The FBI also said that Russian intelligence services have “reliable capabilities for cyber exploitation.” In addition, according to Russian legislation, they have the ability to “remotely access all communications and servers on Russian networks without contacting Internet service providers.”
About app
FaceApp was launched in 2017. It was developed by Wireless Lab, which is based in St. Petersburg. The CEO of the company, Yaroslav Goncharov, previously worked for Yandex.
The company itself says that user data is never transferred to the Russian government and most images are deleted from the application’s servers within 48 hours from the time it was sent.
