The best beach resort in the US: four experts, without consulting, named the same place.
The beach town we're talking about doesn't try to seem better than it is. It has a special quality that's hard to describe. There are no neon signs advertising $1 margaritas, no souvenir shops. Where this paradise on earth is located, explains Travel & Leisure.
According to travel experts, Santa Barbara, California, is the perfect, tranquil, and charming beach town. This cozy city, known for its wineries, quiet downtown, rolling hills, and warm sandy beaches, is nestled between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
"Santa Barbara doesn't try to impress anyone; it simply exists quietly, offering travelers and locals alike the opportunity to explore its many sun-drenched farmers' markets, walkable streets, and spacious beaches," said Annie Cooper, general manager of Drift Hotels Santa Barbara.

Cooper, a Santa Barbara resident, believes much of the city's laid-back charm stems from its convenient scale. "The culture, food, and wine make the city interesting," she said, noting that even her daily commute is an experience in itself, as she takes the Amtrak Surfliner train along the coast.
Tanner Turner, general manager of The Milo, Hotel by the Sea, describes Santa Barbara as "evoking a romantic European seaside vacation," while Ivan Shirokov, associate director of Firebird Tours, says the city has a "laid-back yet sophisticated vibe."
Turner says the accuracy of both descriptions is due to the natural setting, complemented by beautiful Spanish Colonial architecture—from Mission Santa Barbara to the historic courthouse—that has earned the city the nickname "The American Riviera."
Beyond its beaches and architecture, Santa Barbara is renowned for its culinary scene, which Cooper says is reason enough to linger in the city after sunset. She cites Secret Bao, Sama Sama Kitchen, and Third Window Brewing as local favorites. For those willing to drive a short distance up the coast to Montecito, Annie recommends Little Mountain and Bettina, which she describes as "so stylish and so local that it all feels natural."
Travel consultant Jen Curnutt highlighted the Funk Zone—an artsy neighborhood with galleries, tasting rooms, and boutique shops along the Urban Wine Trail—as a must-see for food lovers. She also recommended visiting the historic Mission Santa Barbara. And if you have time, Jen recommends a day trip to Channel Islands National Park, which she calls "the Galapagos of North America."
For those who want to spend all their time on the water, Cooper says there are plenty of activities.
"Surfing, sailing, and paddleboarding are all available right from the main beaches," she explained, adding, "But kayaking at the Channel Islands is a special treat that takes you to another planet."
As for accommodation, experts noted that the city offers options to suit every taste.

Turner's The Milo is located steps from the beach on Cabrillo Boulevard and, he says, "captures the city's distinctive coastal elegance." While the Drift Hotel is a great choice for a long weekend, Cooper refers his visiting friends to the Montecito Inn for a "quieter, dreamier atmosphere, like something out of a Nora Ephron movie."
The best part is, all the experts agree there's no bad time to visit, so whenever you arrive, it'll likely be perfect. The only risk is that, like Cooper, you'll never want to leave Santa Barbara.
