Surname of Mikhail Khodorkovsky became a registered brand
The former head of Yukos, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, patented his last name.
Applications for registration in Russia and several other countries of the world, according to the publication, were filed by the British company MBK IP UK Limited, associated with Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
According to Kommersant newspaper sources in legal circles, Rospatent has registered the trademarks KHODORKOVSKY and KHODORKOVSKY.
The Russian-language trademark received confirmation of registration in Russia 17 April 2015 of the year, English-speaking - 1 June 2015 of the year. The registration information is not contained in the information resources of the department, but the Rospatent officially confirmed the fact of granting legal protection in the territory of the Russian Federation to international registration marks on the dates indicated.
As of the date of publication, trademarks have already received legal protection in Russia, Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine, Norway, Switzerland and some other states.
Lawyers of Mikhail Khodorkovsky confirmed to Kommersant the fact of registration of trademarks. They refused to disclose the businessman’s plans for their practical application. According to lawyers interviewed by the publication, one of the main reasons for registering a brand may be the suppression of speculations on behalf of Khodorkovsky by third parties.
Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who headed the Yukos oil company at the time, was arrested in October 2003 on charges of embezzlement and tax evasion. Together with him, the leader of MENATEP Platon Lebedev was taken into custody. In May 2005, Khodorkovsky and Lebedev were sentenced to nine years in prison (the court later reduced their sentences to eight years).
20 December 2013, Khodorkovsky was pardoned by a decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Lebedev was released in January 2014. Both persons involved in the Yukos case after the liberation left Russia.
