Facebook will pay out money to millions of US residents: how to apply

If you live in the US and used Facebook at some point between May 2007 and December 2022, you will likely receive compensation. But you must apply SFGate.

Meta, the parent company of the San Francisco-based social network, has agreed to pay $725 million to settle a long-disputed Facebook privacy lawsuit.

The class action lawsuit began after the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018. In March 2018, it became known that the British analytical company Cambridge Analytica collected user data through its Facebook application and used it to place political ads, in particular during the US presidential campaign and the referendum on the UK leaving the European Union in 2016.

New violations have been added to the list of other alleged Facebook data transactions. The platform is said to have violated the law by allowing third parties access to users' personal content and information without users' permission. Facebook admitted no wrongdoing by agreeing to the settlement and says it has changed its user privacy practices.

Портал to file a claim, it asks for the contact information of a US resident, and then asks a couple of short questions about Facebook user accounts. The entire application will take less than 3 minutes to complete. The page offers many direct deposit options, including Venmo.

Compensation is due on August 25 after the final settlement hearing is scheduled for September 7. The deadline for opting out of the settlement and retaining the rights to file a separate lawsuit against Facebook for any of the privacy claims is July 26.

What will be the individual settlement payments? It depends on two things: how many people apply and how long the applicant has an account on the platform. The settlement will allocate "points" to applicants for each month they had an account between May 24, 2007 and December 22, 2022, and then split the money (after attorney fees of up to 25%) based on from these numbers.

В agreement about the settlement, which was provisionally approved by a judge on March 29, attorneys for the plaintiffs estimate that between 250 million and 280 million American adults are part of Facebook's user base and are thus eligible for payment. The case could have been taken to court, but the lawyers indicated in the agreement that it would be difficult to prove real damage across the entire user base.
