Facebook reported an 50 data leak of millions of users.
The company Facebook has made a statement that about 50 millions of user accounts could have been hacked as a result of a cyber attack perpetrated on a social network. The fact of the attack was discovered in the afternoon of Tuesday. It is difficult to say exactly how much information has become available to attackers.
The attackers have not yet been identified, but it is already known that the hackers used a vulnerability in the Facebook code, which is associated with the View As function (“view the page as ...”), as a result of which they gained access to account information, writes USA Today.
The Silicon Valley company notified the FBI on Wednesday and fixed a vulnerability in the code on Thursday evening.
"We're still in the early stages of investigating this situation," Facebook's CEO told reporters Friday. Mark Zuckerberg. “We don’t yet know if any of the accounts were actually hacked.”
Zuckerberg says that Facebook has invested heavily in security measures, but after the incident it will further increase the activity of blocking user accounts.
“The reality is that we face constant attacks,” he said. “More needs to be done to prevent this from happening.”
Over 90, millions of Facebook users were forced to log out of their accounts on Friday morning as a security measure. According to Facebook, they will be notified of the reason in the top post of the personalized tape.
Access tokens obtained by attackers by exploiting a code vulnerability are similar to digital keys that help people log into Facebook without having to re-enter their password. Following the attack, Facebook reset the tokens of nearly 50 million accounts that were potentially affected and, as a precaution, the tokens of the 40 million accounts that used the feature. View As in the past year.
When these 90 million people log in to Facebook or any applications that use Facebook login, they’ll receive a notification, said Guy Rosen, vice president of product management.
Facebook says users don't need to change passwords.
The breach brought to mind the latest Facebook privacy scandal, following the Cambridge Analytica controversy and the uncontrolled spread of Russian propaganda during and after the 2016 presidential election. Confidence in the giant social network, used by more than two billion people around the world, has certainly been shaken, and each subsequent time it shakes it further.
“This is a clear breach of trust and we take it very seriously. We are working with lawmakers and regulators to make sure they know what happened,” Rosen told reporters.
Senator Mark Warner, deputy chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, called for an early and public investigation of the violation.
“Today’s data breach is a reminder of the dangers that arise when a small number of companies, like Facebook or the credit bureau Equifax, accumulate so much personal data about individual Americans without adequate security measures,” Warner said in a statement. “This is yet another sobering indicator that Congress needs to take note of and take action to protect the privacy and security of social media users.”
