Jewish federations of North America raise $73,5 million to help Ukraine

Six months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Jewish Federations of North America published a report on the results of an emergency fundraising campaign to help Ukraine.

A total of $73,5 million in donations were collected. These funds are directed to more than 50 non-governmental organizations providing humanitarian assistance, working with communities in Ukraine, with Ukrainian refugees in neighboring countries, as well as with new immigrants in Israel. According to estimates by the Jewish Federations, the total needs of partner organizations helping Ukraine this year will be $99 million.

Thanks to the work of the “Ukraine Emergency Fund” created by the Jewish Federations, 1 tons of medical equipment, clothing, food and hygiene products were collected and distributed; 212 people received hot meals; 239 people were evacuated from the combat zone. 851 requests for help were received through specially created hotlines. 80 new immigrants arrived in Israel from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.

“The Jewish Federations’ collective response to this crisis has been unprecedented, as evidenced by the dozens of nonprofits and countless people we have helped,” said President and CEO Jewish Federations of North America Eric Fingerhut. “The scale of the destruction is enormous, and while the need for our assistance will only increase, the Jewish Federations of North America will make every effort to ease people's pain and suffering by providing the necessary assistance and support to Ukrainian refugees.”

$61 million has already been distributed to the Jewish Federations' main partners - the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAIC), the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and World ORT, as well as dozens of other organizations providing vital aid and assistance to Ukrainian refugees, regardless to their origin.

The funds raised by the Jewish Federations went to cover the operational costs of rescue operations, temporary housing and transportation costs, security costs, humanitarian and psychological assistance, and assistance in receiving new repatriates.

In addition to providing humanitarian assistance to refugees, the Jewish Federations of North America launched a public campaign to expand the rights of refugees and settlers to the United States. Jewish federations also provided grants to support displaced Ukrainians. Last month, the Jewish Federations initiated a $1 million grant to help migrants from Ukraine, with the support of the Shapiro Foundation and the United Jewish Charitable Organization, the Jewish Federation of Boston.

The Jewish federations also trained 90 volunteers, Russian-speaking Jews from the US and Canada, and sent them to help Ukrainian refugees in Poland and Hungary.

Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) are the structural basis of the Jewish community in the USA and Canada and represent more than 300 Jewish federations. Jewish federations raise and distribute more than $2 billion annually through planned support programs and grants to Jewish communities in North America and Israel.
