Nikolai Ridny's artistic practice uses various media such as photography, cinema, installation and text, historical research methods and investigation of current political events. Ridny contrasts sensational visualization and aestheticization of cruelty with a distant critical approach, referring to the representation of violence without its reproduction.
Broadcasting images of violence has always been at the center of the news business, the media. However, with the advent of 1990/XNUMX cable TV news in the XNUMXs, as well as the emergence of social media and live broadcasts, global audiences are constantly confronted with many images of violence from both domestic and international conflicts. While the commercialization of news forces journalists to edit news videos to resemble action movies, the normalcy of human existence has been cut out to keep audiences enthralled by the more salable visuals.
