“This is a very scary feeling”: a Russian-speaking doctor from New York told how she had been ill with COVID-19

Quarantine in New York should have been announced back in February, said gastroenterologist Veronika Dubrovskaya. She suggests that she became infected from her patient because she was not defending herself properly. And all because I didn’t know: the coronavirus probably covered the city much earlier than it is commonly thought. She told about this in the video of the publication "Voice of America".

Who is more often infected with COVID-19

It is impossible to say for sure why some of us get sick with the COVID-19 coronavirus and others don’t. This point of view was shared by gastroenterologist Veronika Dubrovskaya, who was confirmed to have coronavirus. “I suspect that I became infected during the procedures I performed on patients,” she said.

According to her, until March 12 of this year, neither she nor her colleagues suspected how common the COVID-19 virus was in New York. Closer to March 16, it became known about a huge number of people infected with this virus.

“As a doctor, unfortunately, I did not protect myself against the virus. When I did the procedures, I wore a normal surgical mask,” she recalls. Although, Dubrovskaya added, when performing an endoscopy on a person who was confirmed to have the virus, it was necessary to use a specific mask.

Only on March 14, Veronika said, a resolution was issued prohibiting meeting with patients in the clinic, if this is not an extreme case. Thus, everyone switched to distance medicine. If the patient needs emergency assistance, then the meeting takes place in the office. But the doctor should dress “as needed,” Victoria said.

Since Dubrovskaya fell ill almost at the beginning of the New York epidemic, medicine was not yet ready to work with such patients, since all the symptoms were not known, she explained. Now, two weeks later, the situation has improved, Victoria added, and doctors gained experience working with such patients.

About the symptoms

Speaking about the symptoms, the doctor noted that at first she stopped feeling smells and taste. It happened in one day. “I couldn’t smell the coffee or the gas coming from the burner,” she recalls. This seemed strange to her.

The next day the situation worsened. “I started getting bone pain and crazy headaches that we usually get when the temperature rises. But there was no temperature,” she added.

Victoria also felt very weak. Later, a feeling of strong compression in the chest appeared, which many people infected with COVID-19 complain about. “It’s a very scary feeling,” she said.
