'It was like Armageddon': household gas exploded in the suburbs of Boston
An explosion of domestic gas provoked fires in dozens of homes in the vicinity of Boston, causing one person to die and at least 25 to be seriously injured.
The incident occurred 45 kilometers north of Boston in three suburbs - Lawrence, Andover and North Andover. Hundreds of people have been evacuated, gas and electricity have been cut off in the region, reports Air force.
"I've been on the force for 39 years and I've never seen anything like this before," said Andover Fire Department Chief Michael Mansfield. According to him, the picture presented to the firefighters was like Armageddon.
What is known about the victims?
18-year-old Leonel Rondon died in his car, on the roof of which a chimney fell, which was torn off as a result of an explosion inside the house.
According to his relatives, along with the young man in the car were two of his friends. They did not suffer.
25 people were delivered to local hospitals with various degrees of burns and respiratory problems. Doctors report that the condition of some victims is very serious.
What happened?
According to official figures, a total of 80 fires flared up and several explosions occurred. The first calls to the rescue services began to arrive in 16: 30 local time.
Firefighters believe that the tragedy occurred due to the increase in pressure in the main gas pipeline owned by Columbia Gas.
On Friday night, the governor of Massachusetts announced that the incident belongs to the category of incidents that threaten public safety, but assured that the situation is under control.
The company NiSource, whose subsidiary is Colombia Gas, expressed condolences to the relatives of the deceased and promised to help the victims.
Specialists of the company, along with firefighters and police officers, walk around the house to make sure that nothing threatens the people and their property.
18 thousands of homes temporarily remain without gas and electricity.
