If you're planning a holiday trip this year, get ready for very expensive tickets.

Flights during the holiday season will be the most expensive in the last five years. If you're thinking about flying over Thanksgiving or Christmas, be prepared to pay, says CNBC.

According to Hopper, a resource that tracks fluctuations in ticket prices, the average domestic airfare for Thanksgiving trips is $350, while international round-trip flights cost an average of $795 — both 22% more than in 2019, before the pandemic. Covid.

According to Hopper, domestic round-trip tickets for Christmas, which falls on a weekend this year, are almost a third more expensive than in 2019, averaging $463, while international tickets are up 26% to $1300.

Traveling on peak days, such as the Wednesday before Thanksgiving or the days leading up to Christmas, will always be more expensive. Travel experts recommend being flexible and traveling outside of these days.

But Brett Snyder, founder of travel website Cranky Flier and a former airline manager, warns that cheap tickets will be hard to come by any day this holiday season because airlines have improved their control over how many seats they sell.

“Airlines are much better at this now,” Snyder said.

Many of the factors that have contributed to the chaos in air travel - lack of aircraft, personnel and training gaps - will not disappear immediately, limiting future flying opportunities. This also means that prices are likely to remain elevated.

Hopper's lead economist, Hayley Berg, recommends booking your vacation no later than mid-October. “If you see a good price, if it seems reasonable to you, we encourage you to book those tickets,” she said.
