Another US agency leans towards Covid-19 'escaping' from Chinese lab

The global Covid-19 pandemic was due to a leak from a Chinese laboratory, according to the US Department of Energy. This is reported "Radio Liberty".

The version of the laboratory origin of the coronavirus was previously supported only by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Other US agencies did not share this suspicion. Now the Department of Energy has come to the same conclusion.

The FBI has "moderate confidence" in the laboratory origin of the virus, the Department of Energy has "low confidence", writes The Wall Street Journal.

The interlocutors of the publication note that, despite the coincidence of positions, the Department of Energy and the FBI came to the version of the leak for different reasons.

According to US intelligence, the virus began to spread from an infected animal. The 2021 report specifically noted that China did not develop the virus as a bioweapon.

The origin of the virus has also been investigated by the World Health Organization (WHO). In mid-February, the second phase of the study was suspended due to data collection problems in China.

The first case of Covid-19 was detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan at the end of 2019, after which it spread to other countries. On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared a coronavirus pandemic.

After a visit to the Wuhan Institute of Virology in 2021, the WHO said a leak of Covid-19 from the lab was "extremely unlikely". The scientists concluded that the disease was probably transmitted to humans by bats. After severe criticism, including from colleagues, the WHO chief acknowledged that it was premature to rule out a lab leak.

China has repeatedly called speculation that Covid-19 spread from a Chinese laboratory "baseless" and said the virus originated in the United States, where coronaviruses have also been studied.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Covid-19 has been found in about 700 million people worldwide. The death toll is approaching seven million.
