Ex-New York Postmaster Tricked $ 1,2 Million Federal Benefits
A former employee of the US Postal Service in New York has pleaded guilty to fraud over federal benefits in excess of $ 1,2 million.
Richard Klaffka, 59, was involved in a scam with his 62-year-old wife, Kathleen, according to prosecutors, writes AP.
Klaffka told the veteran aid organization in 2006 that he was disabled and he needed to use a wheelchair because of an injury related to military service. He claimed that he could not walk and dress, but officials say that he walked a lot and even rode a bicycle.
He also claimed that he had limited mobility due to injuries received while working in the mail.
In connection with the fake diseases, Klaffke and his wife were ordered to pay more than $ 1,2 million, which they received in the form of compensation payments for veterans and workers.
