Former policeman opened fire in a bar after a quarrel with his wife: 4 people were killed, 5 were injured

Four people were killed and five others were injured when a gunman, believed to be a retired police officer, opened fire at a popular biker bar in Orange County, California on the evening of August 23. The edition told in more detail New York Post.

The suspect died after being shot by the police. The carnage unfolded at Cook's Corner, a restaurant on Santiago Canyon Road.

It is unclear whether the gunman was killed by deputies' bullets or a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The shooting began in a bar around 19 p.m. as a domestic dispute between a retired sergeant from the Ventura Police Department and his wife.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office and the police station, he shot 7 more people, including the cook, after that.

Authorities have not identified the shooter, although local media reported, citing sources, that the only shooter was a retired sergeant who had served for 30 years with the Ventura police force.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said they were working to determine if the shooter was indeed a retired law enforcement officer.

According to the agency, four people, including the shooter and his wife, were declared dead at the scene.

Six people, including five with gunshot wounds, were hospitalized, authorities said.

Two of them were seriously injured, while the condition of the remaining four is said to be stable.

According to a witness, the police shot the gunman near the bar as he was heading to his car, apparently to reload his gun.

Another witness, whose friend was shot in the back as they fled the gunfire and is believed to be among the dead, said they first heard five or six shots from inside the bar, and then a pause followed by a flurry of additional shots.

He initially thought his friend had tripped and hid in the bar's kitchen with the cook, who had been shot in the hand.

No officer was injured during the shooting.

Investigators recovered one firearm from the scene.

Locals say the historic bar, which opened in 1926, must have been packed at the time of the shooting as patrons turned up for an evening of leafless spaghetti and live music.
