The only 'dark' alley in New York, where films and TV series are constantly filmed

Contrary to stereotypes, there are practically no similar places in the whole city.

A rare crime series, film noir, or even a blockbuster with action in New York does without a scene in a dark, dangerous alley. His image is familiar to many viewers - it is a narrow street between brick houses with garbage cans, massive fire escapes and fog it is not clear where. In such places in the story, for example, hiding from criminals or the police, robbed or killed.

Such scenes in the dark alleys help inspire the audience with the same idea: supposedly New York is a city of thousands of mysterious lanes, the authors of the 99% Invisible podcast, which talk about little-known architecture and design projects, emphasize.

However, this is not at all the case - in the historical core of the city, Manhattan, there are six more or less suitable places. In most of them, as explained in 99% Invisible, it is forbidden or “too expensive” to shoot. Therefore, in the vicinity of Broadway, there is only one place where, as a result, scenes for almost all films are born - Cortlandt Alley Lane.

You've seen Cortland Lane on TV shows and movies. In fact, you saw him so often that at a subconscious level you can believe that most lanes in New York look exactly like that. But no, this is only one such place in the whole city - and it makes you take everything wrong.

“But if you tell the director that New York is not a city of lanes, they will look at you as if you have two heads and you don’t understand your job,” says Nick Carr, a search specialist for movie tracks.

According to Karr, we are talking about visiting directors who looked at the pictures taken in New York and also wanted to make a scene in the alley. Carr is disappointed with this phenomenon, because he believes that it is much more interesting to show the side of the city, which really exists.
