The only survivor in a plane crash in Cuba told her story

On May 18, a passenger Boeing 737 crashed in Cuba almost immediately after takeoff from Havana airport. He was making a domestic flight to the city of Holguin, located 670 kilometers from the capital. The plane managed to fly 20 kilometers away from the airport, after which the pilots began to make a turn, probably intending to return to the airport, but did not have time: the plane fell into a sown field, writes “Medusa«.

On board were 110 people, including six crew members. Almost all died, but the rescuers managed to find four survivors at the crash site - they were in critical condition. One of the victims died the same day, two more women - 23-year-old Grettel Landrov and 40-year-old Emily Sanchez - 22 and 25 in May. The only one who managed to save the doctors was 19-year-old resident of Olgina Maylen Dias Almager.

18 August Cuban newspaper Juventud Rebelde reported that Almager's condition had stabilized - and she was transferred from the intensive care unit of the Calixto Garcia hospital in Havana to another clinic, where she will undergo rehabilitation. Journalists of the publication talked with doctors about the case of Meilen Diaz Almager.

According to them, the condition of the girl was very difficult. She had burns, spinal cord, chest and limb injuries. Due to injuries, Almager has an infectious disease; she had to amputate her left leg below the knee. The girl was not immediately told about it - and they even installed a curtain in the middle of her body so that she would not see the nurses treating the seams. According to the newspaper, Almager anyway began to suspect something - and as a result, she was carefully and convincingly told about the operation.

A team of psychologists constantly worked with Almager. At first, she suffered from a memory disorder and was sure that she had a car accident. When she was told what had happened, she was shocked and could not believe it. According to the doctors, it will take a long time for her to recreate the circumstances of the incident.

One of the psychologists at the hospital told the publication that, despite such severe injuries and an extremely unstable condition, Meilen remained happy and cheerful.

“I worked with many people who survived the amputation. I was sure that she would have a breakdown. Most people get depressed in this situation, but it’s done right, ”says the psychologist.

All this time, next to the girl was her family. Doctors say that the most important thing in dealing with relatives of Almager was to constantly give them the correct information and strike a balance between the real forecast and the hopes of loved ones. A special support, they said, was grandmother Almager, whom they called "a woman of great inner strength and sensitivity." She was sure that her granddaughter would be rescued, and urged the girl not to give up even in the most difficult moments.

The clinic staff remembers that Almager constantly sent air kisses to doctors and nurses, said that she loved them, and they reciprocated her. On the day when the girl was transported to another hospital, everyone cried - both she and the team that treated her.

“On this day we were not doctors and a patient, but a family,” said the head physician of the hospital Ifran Martinez Galves. - I would be glad if [Maylen] would stay with us until complete recovery. But I understand that we have completed our task - to save her life. Many of us would like to see her again. ”
