Jungle, gangs, robberies and death: a Kazakhstani traveled 7000 km and 7 countries to reach the USA

Kazakhstani Zhanat Shamiganov came to the United States through an illegal route, crossing seven Central American countries through the jungle. This is almost 7000 kilometers, 500 of which he walked, reports “Present Time".

On his way, the man met people who were robbed, and witnessed how a whole family fell out of a boat in the Caribbean at night, but no one picked them up.

Zhanat told and showed what his journey as a migrant looked like: “We left for Colombia. From there we moved to the Panama border. There we already entered the jungle and continued on foot. Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico."

According to him, all the difficulties began when they got to Panama.

“There is such an untouched natural park there - Darien. It is also called the Darien Pass. It is there that people often disappear because there are no roads. I personally saw one Chinese, he tells me that his group was robbed. Gangs from all over the world hide there. These are people who deal in drugs, fugitives, criminals. Local police, local law enforcement agencies in Panama, simply don’t go there, it’s very dangerous,” said the Kazakh citizen.

“On the second day we already ran out of food and drinking water - we drank from streams, from lakes. And when you constantly move forward and forward at the same pace, your feet are either wet or dry. All this will affect your health. The stones cut the soles of our shoes, our legs - this made our task more difficult to move forward,” said Zhanat.

“When we crossed the Caribbean Sea, so as not to be seen by the coast guard, we moved at night. And at night these guys don't stop. There was such a situation with a citizen of Kyrgyzstan. A child fell from a woman's hands. In the darkness, the woman jumped after the child, and then the husband. But the boat didn’t come back,” Zhanat shared his terrible memories.

“Everything in Costa Rica is more or less safe and civilized. But then you need to be careful, because groups can stop you absolutely everywhere and ask for money. And if you are alone, they can take you hostage and demand a ransom from your relatives. Such cases often occur in Mexico,” the man said.

Due to illegal border crossing in the USA, Zhanat cannot get a job officially and takes various jobs with cash payment.

“Sometimes we help transport people from one home to another. This is called “moving”. Sometimes we work in construction. They pay in cash. In principle, I’m not complaining, everything is fine - we live and work,” says Zhanat.

According to him, he will definitely not be able to return to Kazakhstan in the coming years.

“I definitely won’t be able to return in the next 2-3 years, because here I have to wait for my trials. After this, if you prove your position, then, in principle, after certain documents, you can return to Kazakhstan. But this is not part of my plans yet,” Zhanat said.
