Palaces, harem and expensive cars: Belarusians released a film about Lukashenka's luxurious life

The opposition telegram channel NEXTA released a film about the state of Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko. On the first day it was watched more than a million times, on the second - two million, and on the third - three. The country's population is about 9 million people, writes Air force.

The Belarusian media are considering how the investigation will affect the further fate of the protests in the country.

18 palaces, Maybach and golden pens

The film talks about 18 residences allegedly used by the Belarusian leader. Some of them were built in Soviet times, and some were allegedly “donated” by businessmen close to the president.

It clarifies "Present", in the film, a man with an altered voice, whom the authors call an employee of Lukashenko’s administration, said that millions of dollars are allegedly spent on maintaining residences. Although, at the opening of the Palace of Independence in 2013, Lukashenko said that “not a single budget ruble was invested in its construction.”

Another anonymous source said that the Palace of Independence has a bathhouse, sauna, swimming pool, winter garden, armory, wine cellar and a helipad. The total area of ​​the palace can be more than 50 thousand square meters. It was to this palace that during the summer protests of 2020 Lukashenka flew in by helicopter with a submachine gun in his hands.

NEXTA also claims that Lukashenko has a collection of premium cars worth a total of four million euros. In particular, the publication lists two Audi cars worth 100 thousand euros, a Maybach for 1,5 million euros, a Rolls-Royce for 170 thousand euros, a Mercedes for 160 thousand euros and a Tesla for 100 thousand euros (in 2019, Lukashenko stated that the Tesla electric car was given to him by the CEO of the automobile company, Elon Musk, but he did not confirm this information). Maintaining a fleet of vehicles costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, the film says.

According to Nexta, Lukashenka also has a collection of classic cars worth millions of dollars.

According to League, journalists also spoke about personal details - the “harem” of Lukashenko and the “mother of his son Nikolai”, as well as about who can finance the dictatorial regime of Belarus.

According to NEXTA, the country specially selects girls for Lukashenka's service escort, he himself was against the birth of his son Kolya, and Belarus receives financial assistance not only from Russia, but also from the EU countries.

At the same time, on March 5, Lukashenko claimed that he has no “palaces”, except for the house measuring 7 by 8 meters, where he was born. The authors of the film claim that everything has been verified.

“Of course, we verified this information and asked people for documents confirming their words,” said Stepan Putilo, founder of the NEXTA channel. - And they provided some documents. And, unfortunately, for security reasons [of the sources], we could not show them, although we really wanted to.”

How journalists and analysts reacted

Journalist Andrei Pochobut says that he “didn’t see much sensation” in the film. However, he predicts that the tape will be “killer” for the president’s rating.

“Luxury... On the one hand, so what? Well, grandfather spoils himself in his old age. So what? But the country is floundering in crisis, wages are falling, businesses are closing, prices are rising, living standards are falling, so apart from popular anger, the pictures shown cannot cause anything else,” writes Pochobut.

Journalist Dmitry Gurnevich calls the film “mega-effective.”

“Even after 15 years in journalism, I was again tormented by anger and resentment for the state that was stolen from the people and the time that no one will return to them,” he said.

Political analyst Tatyana Chulitskaya predicts in a comment to Radio Liberty that the Belarusian authorities will react to the film with increased repression, and the president’s supporters are unlikely to change their attitude towards him - after all, they “have not responded to the violence that has been and continues to occur in Belarus.”

“The effect of the tape will be that Lukashenko has stolen the entire country,” says businessman Ivan Shilo.

Journalist Dmitry Galka writes that the film is unlikely to raise people to protest, because corruption is not the main problem in the country.

“Belarus is not suffering from Lukashenko’s greed. She suffers from his unlimited power, burdened by his own limitations and tenacity, madness and cruelty, lack of empathy,” the journalist writes. “Lukashenko does not steal in small ways - he stole the people’s freedom of will and future, their dignity and honor.”
