Double nostalgia: Lego will release a set from which you can build a Pac-Man machine

Children of the eighties, rejoice! Lego toy company is set to release a 2561-piece Pac-Man themed set, reports CNN.

The set is based on a real arcade machine from the 1980s and comes with an illuminated coin slot as stated on the Online Lego.

Pac-Man was launched in Tokyo in 1980 and became the most successful arcade game of all time. Players control Pac-Man, a yellow cheese-shaped character tasked with eating every little dot inside the maze while avoiding four ghosts.

While the Lego set doesn't actually function as a play system, it's "loaded with retro game pieces that get set in motion," according to the company.

The set features what Lego calls a "mechanical maze" that is controlled by turning a crank on the side of the machine.

"Characters move realistically through the maze thanks to triumphant engineering efforts," the site says.

Measuring 33 cm high, 17 cm wide and almost 13 cm deep, the arcade machine has a removable back panel that reveals the inner workings of the machine.

Created by 25-year-old game designer Toru Iwatani, Pac-Man has pioneered a number of gameplay and game design innovations. It had the first "power-up" - a large pill that made ghosts vulnerable - and the first cutscenes, small animation sequences between levels. It was also one of the very first maze games.

In honor of his role as a pillar in video game history, Pac-Man was among the titles added to the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2012.

The Pac-Man Arcade set will go on sale for $270 on June 4 as part of the Lego Icons collection, which is "designed for a challenging yet rewarding building experience," according to the company.

Other sets in the collection include the Land Rover Classic Defender 90, the Titanic and the Eiffel Tower.
