Two babies got into the Guinness Book of Records: they were born 4,5 months prematurely

A brother and sister from Canada, who were born at 22 weeks pregnant, were registered in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's most prematurely born twins. with the BBC.

Adiya and Adrial Nadaraja were born 126 days premature. The previous record was 125 days, set in 2018 by twins in the US state of Iowa.

If the babies were born even one hour earlier than 22 weeks, the hospital would not even try to save their lives, they say in the Book of Records.
Term pregnancy is usually 40 weeks, and these babies were born 18 weeks early.

Their mother Shakina Rajendram said she went into labor when she was 21 weeks and five days pregnant and doctors told her the babies were “not viable” and had “0% chance of survival.”

This was her second pregnancy. The previous one ended in a miscarriage just a few months ago, at the same hospital in Ontario.
Father Kevin Nadaraja said that they were told at the hospital that they could not help with such an early birth, so he stayed up all night and prayed with tears in his eyes.

Most hospitals do not try to save babies born before 24-26 weeks. But fortunately, the couple was able to go to Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, which has a dedicated neonatal intensive care unit.

On the second day of labor, Rajendram - who was then 21 weeks and six days pregnant - was told that if the babies were born even minutes before 22 weeks, they would be left to die.

Despite heavy bleeding, she said she did her best to hold the children for a few more hours.

15 minutes after midnight, her water broke. Less than two hours after 22 weeks, babies were born in the womb.

Addial and Adial were one years old, although they had serious medical problems after their birth.

“We have seen our babies almost die before our eyes many times,” Rajendram said. Now the brother and sister feel great, although they are under the close attention of doctors.

The earliest child ever born was Curtis Means of Alabama, born at 21 weeks and one day.
