'Two Wars' and Trump's invitation to Kiev: how the meeting of the presidents of Ukraine and the USA went

On September 25, within the framework of the General Assembly of the United Nations, a meeting of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump took place. Writes about it RBC Ukraine.

Before the meeting, Trump and Zelensky went to the press.

Zelensky invited Trump to visit Ukraine, recalling that Barack Obama “didn’t find the time” to do so. He invited Trump to give his word that he would come to Ukraine, the American president said that he would “try.”

“We need not just help, but real support,” Zelensky said.

“We have 2 wars going on. The first is with corruption, but I am sure we will win this war. And the first priority is to stop the war in Donbass and take back our territories - Crimea, Donbass. Thank you for your support in this matter,” Zelensky noted during the meeting, writing aboutofficial website of the President of Ukraine.

The President also thanked European countries for their support.

“Only together with the USA and the EU can we stop the war,” added Vladimir Zelensky.

Also, the President of Ukraine told Trump about what he and his team managed to achieve. In particular, he noted that the Verkhovna Rada has prepared another 74 bill.

In addition, the presidents commented on the situation that developed around their telephone conversation in July.

“There was no pressure. You can see it by published transcript“,” Trump said.

“I don’t want to be involved in what can be considered a process of interference in democratic, free elections in the United States,” Zelensky said, answering the question of whether Trump put pressure on him in the Biden case. “You could all read the text.”

“We have an independent country and we have an independent prosecutor’s office. I can’t put pressure on anyone,” Zelensky said, adding that he does not have any “obligations” to Trump.

After a brief conversation with the press, Trump and Zelensky began the meeting behind closed doors.

Zelensky joked several times during the open part of the meeting. He said it was better to meet on television than to talk on the phone. He also noted that Trump called him to Washington, but forgot to name the date. Trump in response to this pointed to his assistants.

“We raised a lot of questions. I told him that a corrupt country is not a very good advertisement for Ukraine. I invited him to Ukraine so that he could see that we truly have a European democratic country. I confirmed that we will do our best. And now we will talk with our team, talk with world leaders, so that this image of Ukraine, when everyone starts saying “what about corruption,” so that this “advertising” ends. And we will begin a new era,” Zelensky said.

“We talked about Crimea. I explained to him that this is our land, we have no questions about the language, we have one language - Ukrainian. It seems to me that he agrees that this is our land and the United States will help us,” added the President of Ukraine.

“Independence is a very important argument for every country. And that’s why I said that no one can and will not put pressure on me. Every person can say what he wants. Although I believe that such conversations between leaders of countries should not be published, I am not afraid of this,” Zelensky commented on the publication of the transcript of the conversation with Trump.
