Two NATO countries have sent out brochures to citizens on how to survive during war.

Sweden and Finland have updated their advice to their citizens on how to survive the war. NATO allies are stepping up their defenses amid the war in Ukraine, reports CNN.

Both countries joined the transatlantic alliance after Russia invaded Ukraine. Since then, many European countries have increased military spending to bolster long-term security in the region.

The leaflets, distributed to millions of households in northern European countries, include instructions on how to prepare for the effects of war, communications and power outages, and extreme weather events.

Government agencies give recommendations on how residents can provide for themselves in the event of war. For example, stock up on bottled water and hygiene products, learn to grow their own food.

There is also advice for parents of infants, as well as those who look after the disabled and elderly: stock up on diapers, special food and medicines in advance.

The Swedish government plans to distribute the brochure Om krisen eller kriget kommer (If a crisis or war breaks out) to all five million households within two weeks from November 18, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), the government agency that produced the brochure, announced.

The fifth version of the Swedish pamphlet, first published during World War II, will focus "more on preparations for war," the MSB said in a statement on November 18. The digital version, published in October, has been downloaded by about 55 users, the agency said.

“The state of the world has deteriorated dramatically in recent years. War is being waged in our neighbourhood. Extreme weather events are becoming more common. Terrorist threats, cyber attacks and disinformation campaigns are being used to undermine security and influence us,” the statement on the MSB website reads. “To counter these threats, we must unite and take responsibility for our country. If we are attacked, everyone must help to defend Sweden’s independence and our democracy.”

The new guidelines in the 2024 edition include advice on evacuation. They explain how to stop bleeding, how to cope with anxiety, how to care for pets in extreme conditions, how to talk to children about the crisis and war, and how to support particularly vulnerable members of society, the MSB noted.

Finland's Ministry of the Interior also issued new crisis guidance on November 18. It includes advice on how to prepare for extended power outages, water shortages, telecommunications disruptions, extreme weather events and military action.

This year, Norway and Denmark, two members of the 32-party bloc, have already published updated military guidelines on how people should prepare for potential crises.
