Two Ukrainian startups entered the ranking of the best US employers: the history of their creation

The annual ranking of the best US startups-employers included two startups, among the founders of which there are Ukrainians. These are GitLab and Allset with headquarters in the USA. Edition MC.today told why one of them was only half Ukrainian, and explained how the second appeared and developed.

What is this rating

"Best US Startups-Employers" is the annual ranking of Forbes and Statista. For him, companies were selected with a number of employees of at least 50 people, founded between 2010 and 2017. All the companies in question were created from scratch. A total of 2,5 thousand American companies were investigated.

They evaluated the employer’s reputation, employee satisfaction, startup website traffic, and the number of employees over a two-year period.

The final list included 500 employers.

How Allset appeared and what he does

Ukrainian startup Allset is on the 263th place in the Hospitality category. The founders are Stas Matvienko and Anna Polishchuk. Headquartered in Los Angeles, California.

Allset is an application that helps Americans book a table, place an order and pay for it via telephone.

The project began with a mobile payment service, but the idea changed during the implementation process. Now it is a service that, with the help of a pre-order system, reduces people 's waiting time in restaurants.

According to Stas Matvienko, having lunch in the USA quickly is really a problem.

“You can’t come and sit at a free table, it can be booked. We have to wait at the counter, then order for a long time, then wait for the order, ”says the co-founder. According to the startup team, in total this process takes in the USA from an hour to two. Allset allows you to reduce the time to half an hour.

Now the startup is cooperating with more than 2,5 thousand restaurants in the USA in 11 cities. In total, over One million orders were processed through Allset.

At the beginning of 2019, Allset and Google became partners. Most Americans search for restaurants nearby using Google Maps. Now, if they choose the institution that Allset works with, they will see the “Find a table” button. By clicking on it, you can book a seat through Allset. In 2016 and 2017, the startup attracted $ 8,5 million investment.

Who are GitLab and can a startup be called Ukrainian

At 35th place in the Technology category is GitLab. One of its founders is Ukrainian Dmitry Zaporozhets, the second is Dutchman Sid Sibrand, because debates about whether the startup can be called Ukrainian are still ongoing.

GitLab is a platform for software developers. It allows you to store program code on one cloud service so that groups of programmers can work together on it.

The first version in 2011 was created by Dmitry Zaporozhets. He then worked as a programmer in a consulting firm in Ukraine and wanted to build a platform so that company employees could exchange codes. The management of the company considered the best options for such a platform to be too expensive, so Dmitry did everything himself.

The news of the free open source tool quickly spread thanks to a post on Hacker News. This is the website of the Y-Combinator startup business incubator. Other developers, including Sid Sibrand, a Dutch entrepreneur, began to complement it.

In 2012, Sibrand told Zaporozhets that he was going to open a company and use GitLab.

A year later, Dmitry Zaporozhets quit his job and joined Sibrand on an ongoing basis. Officially, they launched in 2014, and in 2015 they were accepted into the Y-Combinator. GitLab currently has headquarters in San Francisco and has operations in 47 countries.

In September 2018, GitLab became a "unicorn." Its capitalization exceeded $ 1 billion. Then the startup attracted $ 100 million of investments. In October 2019, the company raised another $ 268 million, capitalization reached $ 2,7 billion.
