Duolingo is looking for a trainer for its owl mascot: it's a joke job, but you should still apply for it

Language learning app Duolingo has posted a job opening for an “owl trainer” to work with its mascot character, Duo the owl, reports Happy Monday.

In description Vacancies Duolingo notes that it is looking for a “fearless and talented owl trainer.” He must have a degree in avian psychology or a related field, such as ornithology, bird training, or wildlife rehabilitation.

The candidate must be prepared for the "brazen, uninhibited and downright extravagant lifestyle" of Duo the owl. Duties listed include: managing Duo's daily schedule, organizing weekly Evian water baths for the bird, conducting transcendental meditation sessions, coordinating luxury swimsuit fittings, and cleaning and disinfecting the walls of the bird office.

In addition to humorous requirements, the job description also contains satirical ones, ridiculing real problems in the labor market. The first is “the ability to work under high pressure and extremely unrealistic deadlines.” The company writes that it expects candidates to have “30+ years of experience in a similar position.” This inconsistency is often found in real job descriptions, where employers require several years of experience from candidates for entry-level positions.

Another requirement is to have “strong negotiation skills, but not too strong.” Many job seekers know how difficult it can be to present yourself as qualified enough for a job, but not overqualified so as not to scare off the employer.

The candidate is also required to be “willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement about any incidents.”

The star of social networks

Note that the owl mascot from the Duolingo application is a social media star. On Twitter, you can find many jokes about how persistently Duo reminds you of lessons and laments if the user misses them. The company decided to take advantage of the owl's reputation and created it Account on TikTok. Within a few months, he became incredibly popular and has almost 8 million subscribers. Each video features the owl herself: she either twerks on a table, or is a fan of British singer Dua Lipa, or gets upset when someone uses Google Translate. The owl constantly picks up social media trends, and memes with it go viral.

Duolingo's actual goal with this humorous job posting was to attract attention to itself as an employer. The company encouraged Duo's loyal fans to fill out the form and leave their contact information so that in the future there would be an opportunity to contact candidates and discuss real vacancies.
