Happy with life and work: 10 countries where immigrants live best

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted the lives of people around the world, but depending on where you live and the local response to prevention, your experiences could be very different. CNBC.

This experience is among the data compiled by the international expat community Internations for the latest Expat Insider survey, which took over 12 people to understand how happily they lived and worked abroad in the past year.

In first place, immigrants living in Taiwan reported being the happiest on a variety of factors, including quality of life, career prospects, ease of settling down, and overall satisfaction with life abroad. Among a population of about 23 million people in Taiwan, there have been 1682 coronavirus cases and 12 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University, and by the summer of 2020, local transmission of the virus had virtually stopped. The capital raised the city's coronavirus warning levels last week.

Taiwan's capital Taipei has been voted the best city for immigrants for several years, with particularly high marks for efficient local transportation, affordable healthcare, and friendly residents who immigrants say help them feel more confident in their new life for abroad.

Other countries that made headlines at the start of the pandemic for their bold leadership to contain the coronavirus, including New Zealand, Australia and Vietnam, are also in the top ten. In addition to Taiwan and New Zealand, immigrants in Qatar said they were most pleased with the official reports they received from leaders and health authorities about Covid-19 as the pandemic developed over the past year.

Overall, 45% of respondents say Covid-19 has impacted their current stay abroad or their plans to move. Roughly one in three people said the pandemic delayed his plans to move abroad, and about one in five immigrants already living abroad said the outbreak prevented him from returning home last year.

In a survey conducted in January 2021, expats were asked to rate their satisfaction across four main categories, including quality of life (e.g. healthy environment and reliable Wi-Fi infrastructure), ease of settlement (e.g. language barriers and friendliness of local residents), personal finance (for example, access to health care); and work abroad (for example, job security and a stable local economy). Places with an affordable cost of living, high investment in social safety nets, and access to plenty of outdoor and leisure activities to balance work and life also top the list.
