Homeowner shoots young couple after arguing over rent

In Hamilton, Canada, a landlord shot and killed a young tenant couple who were soon to be married. The suspect barricaded himself in the house and died in a shootout with police, reports NBCNews.

Hamilton police received a call at approximately 17:40 p.m. on May 27 in the evening.

When Hamilton police officers arrived at the scene on Jones Road in Stony Creek, Ontario, they found two people dead, a 27-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man. They were later identified by the Hamilton Police Service as Carissa McDonald of Stony Creek but had previously lived in Huntsville, and Aaron Stone of Hamilton.

The suspect involved in the double homicide was a 57-year-old homeowner who allegedly committed the crime before police arrived, according to the Hamilton Police Department. ABCNews.

Officers determined that the two were living in the house as tenants and were shot dead as a result of "an argument between a landlord and a tenant," police said. “Obviously, there was some dispute regarding the condition of the house,” police spokesman Steve Bereziuk said.

Young people, an assistant teacher and an electrician, were engaged.

“The 57-year-old landlord barricaded himself in the house with a firearm registered to him. The Hamilton Police Emergency Response Team cordoned off the area while negotiators made contact with the man in an attempt to resolve the incident peacefully, police said. — At some point during the negotiations, the suspect fired at a Hamilton police armored vehicle. The suspect later fired additional shots, which led to a confrontation with police.”

The threat was neutralized by the police. The suspect was fatally shot during a shootout with police and died at the scene.

The families of both victims have been notified, police said, and several witnesses have already been interviewed by the homicide unit.

Police said the victims' families were "extremely upset." “As you can imagine, these are not the people this should be happening to,” Bereziuk said. “They are not involved in any crime and have not led a lifestyle that could lead to such an incident.”
