Immigration agents will now need a warrant to enter California schools and courts
The California Senate 29 in January approved a bill prohibiting federal immigration agents from entering schools, courthouses, and other state buildings to arrest or interview people without a corresponding warrant issued by the court.
By the author Senate Bill 183 Senator Ricardo Lara (Democratic Party) spoke, the document is part of a wider California Democratic plan to resist President Donald Trump's call for increased immigration controls and deportations, reports LA Times.
Lara believes that the law will help reassure immigrant parents bringing their children to school, relieve them from the fear of acting as witnesses in court or visiting institutions to pay fines for breaking traffic rules.
According to Californian senators, heightened concerns about possible deportation forced many parents not to let their children go to school and stop using basic social services, which include food (meaning going to cafes and restaurants) and health care.
At the same time, Republican senator Joel Anderson said that the bill would put bailiffs and other law enforcement officers in a difficult position, forcing them to intervene in federal arrests, which would affect their other duties, which they already have a lot of.
“Agents just need to have warrants. This bill does not require anyone to interfere with the arrest process,” Lara countered.
The Senate supported the 28 bill with votes against 7; now the document should be considered by the State Assembly.
